Spring Boat Checklist

Are you ready to have some fun in the sun? We’re midway through spring and summer is just around the corner, which means it’s about that time to pull out the boat for some lake action! Whether you enjoy fishing, tubing, or hanging out on the vessel with your friends, there are plenty of activities to look forward to on the water. However, not having a fully operating boat will make you want to jump overboard rather than enjoy the day on the waves. Thankfully, we’re here to help provide the necessary tips to help you prepare for boating season. Check out these handy boat maintenance tips for spring!

To make sure your boat doesn’t break down on the water, you’ll need to carry out a full inspection of your vessel. The last thing you want is to be stranded out in the middle of the lake due to a poor diagnosis!

Boating Safety Checklist

  1. First, take a look at your fuel system to make sure that there isn’t any leaks or damage to the hoses or main tank. If you see any evidence of deterioration to these components, then you need to look into repairing or replacing them. Depending on where you stored your boat during the winter months, there’s a good chance that it was exposed to freezing temperatures and harsh conditions. This can have a disastrous effect on your belts, cables, and other hoses causing them to crack or loosen. One main sign to look for when detecting worn impaired belts is a black residue near the pulley. If this is evident, then you’ll need to replace the belt and make sure it’s fastened tightly.
  2. The functionality of your boat’s electric system and propeller are essential to ensuring smooth sailing. Do a quick run through of your battery and wire connections to verify that there are no signs of corrosion. It would be wise to test your battery before hitting the water to confirm it can successfully hold a charge.
  3. Inspect the boat’s propeller, carefully inspect it for any cracks, dings, or distortion. A busted propeller can result in a very bumpy ride and can even do damage to your engine and transmission.
  4. Inspect the boat’s hull to look for any damage or abnormalities. Even the slightest fracture can worsen with use, so take every measure you can to prevent the sinking of your ship.
  5. Replenish all of your boat’s fluid levels, including coolants, power steering, drive lubricants, and engine oil. If you did not winterize your boat beforehand, then this is a critical step in order to ensure your boat is functioning at full speed. It also wouldn’t hurt to give your boat’s hull, deck, and topside a good thorough wash so that your vessel is ready to shine on the water!
  6. Put together a safety kit. Boating accidents are common and you want to make sure that you’re prepared for anything, especially if you’re on the water with multiple people. We also urge you to store plenty of lifejackets on board and enforce riders to have them on at all times!

Remember, not only does the boat need to be prepared for its return on the water, so does the driver. If you haven’t boated in a while, it would be wise to ease back into things instead of hitting the ground running. Operating a boat is a lot different than driving a car and it takes enormous care and concentration, so you need to get back into a groove to make sure you’re not a threat to yourself or others on the water.

Thanks Al Helps Kickoff the 2017 Soccer Season in Arlington

At Al Boenker Insurance, we value teamwork and discipline. It maximizes performance and is the winning formula for success. These characteristics are important in all aspects of life and we believe there’s no better way to develop these skills than with sports. In order to instill these values into the community, we’ve decided to partner with the Arlington Parks and Recreation department to help sponsor the city’s youth athletic program.

Last weekend, Al Boenker Insurance helped usher in the opening day for the youth soccer season by donating over 7,000 jerseys and 200 youth soccer scholarships via the EcoMedia CBS ad program. It was an honor to see the joy and excitement on every single child’s face as they received their new “Thanks Al” uniforms. The day turned out to be a tremendous success as hundreds of families came out to support this meaningful cause. To see so many kids working together, learning leadership and communication skills while participating in healthy athletic competition was an amazing sight to behold. Our Chief Marketing Officer, Trey Morris, was a keynote speaker at the event, where he talked about the importance of supporting youth sports and giving back to the community. We were also pleasantly surprised with a generous gift from the parks and rec department. After the ceremony, they presented us with a framed signed jersey to commemorate their thanks for Al Boenker’s generous contributions to the program.

We believe that youth sports are an essential part of every child’s life. It teaches values and lessons that few other activities can at that age. Children can learn that with practice, preparation and hard work, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their goals. Even the negative aspects of athletic competition can turn out to be beneficial. In sports and in life, everyone loses and fails at some point. By experiencing failure, one can learn to improve from their mistakes and gain perspective. Not only are youth sports a great means of developing character values, but they also keep kids healthy and active. Today’s youth is consumed by technology that usually prevents them from doing any outdoor activities. This results in isolation that can lead to physical, behavior and psychological disorders. Youth sports helps tackle this issue by engaging kids in physical activity that can stimulate growth and enhance one’s emotional and physical health. Studies also show that playing youth sports can have a positive crossover in the classroom. Children who play sports tend to experience better academic success, which leads to a lower chance of dropping out and a higher chance of getting into college. By partnering with the Arlington Parks and Recreation department, we hope that we can give the kids in our community a chance to experience these valuable life lessons while staying active and having fun at the same time. Our customers mean the world to us, and there’s nothing that makes us happier than to give back and serve our community. At Al Boenker Insurance, our desire is to help make a difference by enriching social good.

It’s our responsibility to ensure that today’s children have the resources and opportunities to grow, learn and thrive for a better tomorrow. To make sure that they’re a part of something special that builds character and discipline. Every child deserves the opportunity to play, to be part of a team, to celebrate, and to be celebrated. That is the reason why we’re supporting the Arlington Parks and Recreation Youth Sports Leagues – to help ensure that everyone’s in the game.

With the youth soccer season officially underway, now is a great time to make sure that all of your insurance needs are up-to-date. Give us a call at 1-800-Thanks-Al to have an agent review your policy to confirm that your auto insurance has the right amount of coverage for your family and your needs. Thanks to our various social outreach initiatives, Al Boenker Insurance has put a stamp on addressing our community’s needs by enriching social good. This is all made possible through our Pay It Forward events, where once a month we take a day out of our busy schedule to give back by picking up the tab at a local restaurant. These events also give us the privilege of interacting and connecting to our customers face to face, so that we can show our gratitude for their loyalty and patronage.

The Al Boenker Insurance Agency has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its 45-year run, including the Paige Eliand Award, which is presented to the person whose political involvement has most benefited independent insurance agents. The award is named after former IIAT member Paige Eiland, a tireless supporter of IIAT’s political action program, IMPACT, and a respected voice for independent agents. 5 Ways to Avoid Road Rage

There are a lot of angry stressed out drivers on the road who tend to react poorly to certain situations. This often leads to road rage, which can be a very dangerous threat to highway safety. Even though you can’t control how others react to certain driving behaviors, you can always control your actions. Deal with these aggressive drivers and ensure your safety with these 5 ways to avoid road rage!

Tailgating Methods – Tailgating is a major cause of inciting road rage from other drivers. If you see someone tailgating you and honking their horn, that probably means that they’re late or in a hurry. Simply pull over to the side and let them pass. If you find yourself tailgating someone, try to either switch lanes or ease down on your speed. Blinking your headlights can also be a polite way to notify the driver that they’re driving too slowly.

Apologize – If you’re at fault in a certain situation, simply wave your hand and acknowledge your mistake. This will show the other driver that you’re mature and willing to bury the hatchet rather than escalate things further. Also, if the other driver is frustrated by what happened, it will likely calm them down knowing that you’re taking responsibility for your actions.

Listen to Music – Nothing reduces stress and makes a car ride smoother than listening to some of your favorite tunes. If you get into a sticky situation with a nasty driver while listening to some good music; it should help control your emotions and distract you from their crazy antics.

Avoid Angering Others Further – There are certain things you can avoid doing that will prevent aggravating drivers even further. Don’t honk your horn excessively or make eye contact with an angry driver. This can lead to them doing something drastic, which can lead to either you getting road rage or heightening the tension even further.

Adjust Your Driving – If someone is continuously honking at you, simply remain calm and figure out what it is that you need to adjust. This can be related to speed, swerving into a lane or how you’re braking. If you feel that you’ve adjusted and they continue to honk at you then steer away from their car and let them pass.

Before putting these helpful tips to good use, make sure that all of your insurance needs are up-to-date.
